NEA NCCS Climate Change Forum, North East District

CER students, Joanna, Sandra, Zhi Cong and Zen Chen were invited to support the Climate Change Forum Programme, a community event for North East District organized by National Climate Change Secretariat and NEA at Sengkang CC on 26 November 2011. There, they set up the Standby Energy Saver demo kit and explained to the Sengkang Residents how it can help them to save electrical bill by shutting down the electrical appliances rather than leaving them in standby mode.

Kampung Senang Flag Day 2011

On the 14th October this year, some of the Main Committee members of energy Oasis attended a talk-cum-presentation that was organised by PlanetSolar. PlanetSolar is a project that aims to show and share with the world that 'clean' technologies are achievable with the current technology. Hence, the team designed and built a boat that runs enitrely on solar power.

Thailand Study Trip 2011

A study trip to Thailand from 10-15 October 2011 was organised for CER students.

For the first 3 days, the students stayed at the All Green Learning Center (AGLC). There they had experience making green products and producing wood vinegar.

The students also got to take trips to hydro, wind and solar power plants.

Waterfall and Winery tours.

On the 13th, the students transferred to Baiyoke Boutique Hotel in Bangkok.

Visits to Damnoen Saduak Floating market, Jeath Museum and Riverkwai Bridge.

Trip to clean energy expo 2011 @Suntec

On the 2nd of November 2011, several MIE(Microelectronics) and CER(clean energy) students, accompanied by several lecturers made a trip to Suntec City where a three day clean energy expo was held. Booths from various companies around the world filled the exhibition hall and they showcased a wide variety of clean energy related products, systems, ideas etc. Compared to last year, the expo this year showed more solar related companies (according to my friend who also went last year) and I personally felt that there was a wide variety such as LEDs, cooling systems, biomass, solar, wind etc. Overall, I felt that it is more of the experience that I gained from this expo and it is really an eye-opener.

National Climate Change Competition 2011

Standby Energy Saver, a prototype developed by a group of four CER students, Chen Zhangxiang, Joanna Chew Yujiao, Sandra Elizabeth Lee and Tam Zhi Cong, won the Third Prize, $1000, in the University/Polytechnic category of the National Climate Change Competition 2011. The competition is about coming up with a proposal and prototype to promote the awareness of climate change among students and to involve students in caring for the environment by showing how individual actions can affect the climate and the environment. Beginning in June 2011, the students were subjected through 3 rounds of assessments by renowned judges from both public and private sectors. Best Four Bayer Young Environmental Envoy Award 2011

Lim Yu Ke, the past subcommittee member of Energy Oasis, the CER Student Club, was accorded as one of the twelve Bayer Young Environmental Envoy 2011. Being the Bayer Young Environmental Envoy, he had designed, built and implemented his proposed environmental project. the Solar Driven Neighborhood Compost Tumbler at Kampung Senang, the organic farm located at Tampines. The project enables Kampung Senang to recycle the solid waste from their farm and the nearby BEST Supermarket into useful compost in a sustainable way. On 16 September 2011, after completion of the environmental project and undergone a judging interview, he received an award plaque at a formal awarding ceremony at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Singapore from the Guest of Honour, Dr Amy Khor. In addition, he was also accorded as one of the Best Four Bayer Young Environmental Envoy envoys, adjudged to have the best environmental projects and will join their counterparts from across four continents in an all-expense paid educational trip to Germany on October 15-22, 2011. EO Sports Day @ TP

On 12 Aug 2011, Energy Oasis organised and held a sports event, the EO Sports Day, at Tembusu Grove in the school grounds. It was mainly organized to encourage team building between classmates, bonding among CER year 1 and year 2 students and for everyone to have fun. The sports event consists of 2 categories namely Soccer and Captain's ball. About 80 students supported the event and EVEN LECTURERS were invited to have a match. The event started at around 3pm at ended at around 5pm, though it was a short 2 hours event it was a memorable day where the competitors sweat and have fun on the field.

Study Trip to Neste Oil Plant

On Wednesday, 10 Aug 2011, after classes and accompanied by lecturers, some year 2 and year 3 CER students visited Neste Oil Plant in Tuas. From the talk by the person-in-charge, we were introduced to the production, raw materials, uses, advantages to biodiesel that they are producing and many more interesting information. Although we could not tour the production plant due to safety issues, we managed to view the massive structures from afar before leaving. Overall, such visits brings reality to our course and subject and is an eyeopener to all of us.

World Leadership Conference

From 13^th to 15^th July 2011, a group of students from Clean Energy participated in the World Leadership Conference 2011. A build up to the Rio+20 Earth Summit, the World Leadership Conference is the platform for young environmental leaders to turn their passions in environmental into actions. It is also a platform for like-minded youths from all over Asia Pacific to come together to learn, voice out and take action to move towards a green sustainable future for planet Earth. The three days workshops and seminars have allowed us to gain more knowledge about climate change. We have also managed to make new friends and exchanged ideas and views about saving the Earth. Overall, it was a great experience!

On 20 Jun 2011, a day camp, the EO Day, at Pahlawan Beach, Sentosa Island was organized for team building and bonding among the CER freshmen. About 35 students supported the event. Community Service at Kampung Senang Tampines

On 17 Jun 2011, led by Guang Hua, teh Community Service Head, about 10 of us in the EO main committee went to Kampung Senang at Tampines, an elderly care center and organic farm for some community service work. We helped the farm to refurbish the roof of their green house and it was a two hours' of sweating. When sun set, it was partially completed. Jun Jie and Jun Song went back to complete the task in the following day. It was our debut in term of community service and we will ensure that many more are in the pipe line..

Congratulations to our fellow CER student,Yu Ke, who have been shortlisted as one of the 12 Bayer Young Environmental Envoys in Singapore. Being one of the esteemed Bayer Young Environmental Envoys, he has a heavy responsibility to carry out a meaningful project that will benefit the Singapore environment. For this, he is currently fabricating a solar driven community compost tumbler that will be donated to an organic farm, Kampung Senang at Tampines. On 7 Jan 2011, a learning journey was organized by the club for about 40 CER students to visit the Zero Energy Building at BCA Academy. There, the students were briefed about the design and retrofitting of the platinum, green mark certified building and the various energy saving features incorporated into the building. It will take 20 years to recover the cost. A learning journey to Clean Energy Asia 2010 Trade Fair (3 Nov)

A learning trip was organized on 3 November 2010 for about 30 CER students to attend the Clean Energy Asia 2010 trade fair, a part of Singapore International Energy Week, jointly organized by the Energy Market Authority (EMA) and the Energy Studies Institute (ESI).

At the trade fair, various advanced clean energy systems and accessories such as vertical wind systems, HIT photovoltaic modules, green cars and oil recovery and purification systems were showcased by the leading Cleantech companies worldwide. The students used the opportunity to get familiarized with the companies, products and technological advancement in clean energy industries. The knowledge gained has enriched the students.

Singapore G1 Race

A group of students have recently participated in the first Singapore G1 Race held at Marina Bay.

During the holidays, these students spent many days in school learning and watching our first ever G1 car made in Temasek Polytechnic Clean Energy Centre.

During the race, they were serious and determined to win the race.

Despite the hot weather, the team persevered and successfully completed the all the races.

Many of our students went down to Marina bay and given their support for our G1 team and cheering them up.

We are proud to say that Temasek Poly had won the 2nd place for the G1 race!

Malaysia Trip

About 50 students went to Clean Energy's Malaysia Study Trip. We visited Universities learning about Palm Oil and Solar Cars.

We learnt many things, how useful palm oil is, how solar cars are made and tested.

We were also shown how to make 1liter of fuel more efficient and how biodiesel is made.

We also had fun during the trip, such as meeting Michael the orangasli, who taught us how to use a blowpipe. Some of us got the chance to use it, the target, a stuffed monkey.

We also had a chance to visit their houses to see how they live.

We also had a trekking expedition through the forest. It was a really unique experience, one we will remember.

A lot of fun times were made, and things learnt and a valuable experience indeed.

Environmental Care Awareness Talk by invited speaker, Mr Howard Shaw, SEC Executive President, for CER Students

Journey Towards Environmental Sustainability: Challenges and Opportunity.

On 7 July 2010, in the midst of Saving Gaia Green Initiatives by Mediacorp and various green events in conjunction with Earth Day 2010, the CER student club, Energy Oasis, did our part by organizing an environmental care awareness talk for CER/MIE students at Lt 29.

Through the Course Manager, Mr Wong Cho Loo, Energy Oasis invited Mr Howard Shaw, the Executive President of Singapore Environment Council (SEC) for giving an educational talk titled Journey Towards Environmental Sustainability: Challenges and Opportunity.

About 80 CER/MIE students attended the 1 hour talk that took place at Lt 29.

Instead of making it another green talk that aimed to instill the feeling of fear by highlighting the environmental gloom and doom, Mr Howard Shaw skillfully captivated the audience by inspiring them to empower themselves throught the belief that nobody and no effort is too insignificant.

Among some interesting points he raised in the talk are:

“Singapore is a small nation that consumes less than 5% of world energy. Therefore, whatever we do, it can’t make a significant impact..”, this pessimistic perception is now challenged by the big splash that Singapore is making through exporting our cutting edge water reclamation and management technology in a Big Way.

“Wind power is not feasible in Singapore as the average wind speed is less than 6 m/s..” However, anyone standing by the side of PIE, TPE or ECP surely can feel a much higher wind speed, swirled up by the passing-by vehicles. It is heartening to know that an innovative prototype has been invented by an engineering student in Singapore to harness this special wind power and the prototype is undergoing evaluation by LTA now.

Indeed, it was an inspiring talk. Mr Howards ended the talk by saying that “Two types of person who will firmly believe and advocate environmental sustainability; someone who has seen the worst disaster or someone who has seen the most beautiful scene on earth and I encourage you all to explore and see the most beautiful scene on earth.”

As a token of appreciation to Mr Howard for his sharing, we recycled a silicon wafer and fabricated a little “Green” memento using the solar cell processing technology in our clean room. He was delighted by our little green thought..

Hong Kah Sec's Visit

Yesterday, students from Hong Kah Secondary School visited to learn about Clean Energy.

A 15-min lecture was given about Clean Energy, then there was a visit to TP's Clean Energy Centre.

The Students even had a chance to take a ride on TP's Fuel Cell Bicycle.

TP will be having our CCN Day on 13 Nov 09 (Friday), from 12.00noon to 5.00pm. All 6 Schools will be involved in this coming CCN Day and classes from 12.00noon to 5.00pm will be cancelled.

E-GUIDES RECRUITMENT is HERE!

What e-guides do?
E-guides basically refer to engine guides.
During the open house, E-guides will bring visitors around and tell the visitors regarding the courses and open house will be held from 7th to 9th January 2010, where LOA will be provided. All who have signed up will have to attend a e-guides training camp on the 11th and 12th Dec

How to sign up?
Come down to outside engine hall1. A booth will be there from 9-11th November and also 23-24 November.

If u wanna make any changes for ur CDS, tml's the last day to so! and if u haven't buy ur bks, do get 'erm~
